Student Interest in Green Campus Innovations

On Earth Day in year 1970, months before the Environmental Protection Agency existed; a bunch of eco-minded scholars at the Varsity of Colorado at Stone started something giant — and green. More than forty years on, CU’s Environmental Center has grown to use more than a hundred scholars, operate a recycling program so big it really turns a nice profit, and lead U.S.

Colleges in green campus creativity. It has learned, as other universities are realizing, that turning green goes past environmental stewardship — it is also good business. According to a 2010 Princeton Review survey of sixteen thousand college candidates and elders, 66% of inward bound freshman need to know about a possible college’s supportability efforts, and a full 24% say a school’s eco-friendliness “much” influences their call to either apply or attend. That very same student interest has been a driver behind CU’s green campus practices, according to Dave Newport, director of CU’s Environmental Center for the previous 5 years.

“The students here were the ones pushing for ingenious programs and making them occur by voting with their wallets to tax themselves, and increase their student costs to pay for them,” Newport told WalletPop in a telephone interview. At any particular time, about 10,000 of CU’s thirty thousand scholars are using cycles to find a way around the school, which boasts a long list of firsts: the first zero-waste soccer stadium, first all-organic dining hall menu, and the state‚Äôs first school recycling program on its green campus. While some varsities ‘ green campus efforts are still in their youth, other leaders in the supportability field stand out, earning top grades on the report card.

College of the Atlantic — a little, eco-minded Maine liberal humanities college boasting to be the only carbon neutral U.S. University vis net emissions as a green campus — composts all food on campus and uses 100% replenish-able electricity, purchased from an in-state hydroelectric project.
Middlebury School remits recycled paper use at buildings on its green campus, and puts waste to work, using “cow power” — energy made of farm dung. Harvard College President Drew Faust affirmed the Ivy League leader’s green campus commitments at a Supportability Party speech attended by former vice chairman Al Gore, and in the Southwest, Arizona State College plans to reach a net 0 carbon emission footprint on its 50,000+ student campus by 2025.
